Enough
It's been a long time since the attacks of 9/11 - a whole new generation that never lived through it has grown up. It is one of the only attacks on American soil so that we, as a nation, always felt relatively secure until then. At the moment I am constantly reminded of it by law firm commercials on TV advertising that, if you were working at the World Trade Center at the time, they could find you ways to be compensated for any kind of sickness that may have resulted from the toxic dust and debris.
We always remember where we were when 9/11 occurred, and we are reminded every year when the names of those who died are read on that day. Of course, living near the city, like we do, you always feel closer to the event.
Yesterday we saw the assassination of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk on TV. On the same day, there was another school shooting in Colorado and, if we widen the scope of violence, we see that Poland was attacked by drones from Russia, that Qatar was bombed by Israel, and the killing continues in Ukraine, Sudan, and Gaza.
The cover of the latest Time Magazine has one big word on it: ENOUGH, and under it: The epidemic of American political violence.
We live in a world of violence, whether it be 9/11 or current events. It's striking that for 9/11 people gather to remember those who were felled by this atrocity. My faith tells me that every life is valuable, every life is sacred, and that we should never give up working for a peaceful world and doing all we can to reduce the gun violence in our own country.
Enough.
