If You Live Long Enough

I happened to run across this quote from Oprah Winfrey:If you live long enough, there is going to be a trial in your life. It may be disease, it may be jobs, it may be any number of crises that stand outside yourself to try to tell you who you are. And it is your job to know the truth and let that truth set you free. Two things resonated in my mind. One, that she was right in pointing out that there is some crisis ahead of us that will test us beyond what we ever thought. What that can be is anyone's guess - a loss of a loved one, a failure of some sort in school or on the job, a marriage gone wrong. Something will happen that will shake you to your core. There is little doubt about that. As Oprah said, it will tell you who you are. One thing that can be helpful in that journey is your faith. Sometimes it's all you have to get through the "dark night of your soul", but if the Scriptures are right, and I believe they are, you will get through and you will overcome. The other thing that she said is that the truth will set you free. This is an often-quoted saying taken out of context on TV shows, like Seinfeld, and from pundits on various news networks. For us as Christians, it's facing the truth about ourselves, however unpleasant at times it may be. The truth is really the recognition that we must change things about ourselves, and when we face that truth, we are able to conquer many things and move forward.Whatever lies ahead for each of us, may we find the strength we need to face it and to discover the truth about who we are.MEH
