I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change

"I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change" is the name of an off-Broadway musical that opened back in the nineties.  I loved the title, and it popped into my mind recently as I was contemplating my daughter's wedding.  As a father you are always thinking about your children, their happiness, and their well-being.  Allison and Brian were getting into something that you really don't fully grasp until you have journeyed some years together.  As I said to them in church - "You have no idea what you are doing."  It's true.  You may think you do, but you really don't.  You will realize this truth after you have journeyed together for a few years.changeAs the title suggests, you must change.  You can love people for just the way they are, as the Billy Joel song goes, but marriage and life will become lessons in change.  You may change a lot of diapers, your life may change drastically after children, where you live may change, your bad habits will need to change, and for some people, their mind may change...  As human beings we are resistant to change, have an aversion to conflict, and want instant solutions.  I have discovered, sometimes painfully, that, whether we like it or not, we will have to change if we want our marriage to survive and/or if we want to survive ourselves. If you are interested in changing as a person, as a parent, as a spouse, join me on Sundays at church - change begins with confession.MEH
