In the last twenty or so years cars have been produced, in which a light goes on that says, “Check engine”. It is, no doubt, useful. After all, you need to know if the oil is too low, the engine is going to blow up, or some other malfunction is going to happen. I have often thought that it would be great if every human being had a warning light, that would start blinking and say things like, “Check marriage”, “Get a physical”, “Feed your soul”, etc. Unfortunately, humans don’t have that and oftentimes it ends up being late in the game when these issues are addressed.
Since we don’t have it, maybe we need to examine ourselves to find that we are running on empty, being angry, losing our patience, feeling depressed and irritable, and overanxious about too many things. It seems to me that, when it comes to your spiritual life, you need to be feeding your soul as often as possible. Otherwise, it can be like running out of fuel that is needed to energize your life. Actually, I think lots of people are spiritually strung out, or even spiritually dead. I can tell when morale is low around St. John’s or other places.
